First Sunday in Advent 2022 & Missalette

With the First Sunday in Advent, we begin a new church year. The scripture readings in the church year follow a three-year cycle. Last Sunday, we finished Year C. This Sunday we begin Year A. The colour of the priest’s vestments will be purple during Advent.

Purple is the colour of preparation and repentance. At the beginning of Mass, we will light the first candle on the Advent wreath. This candle is purple. The first candle symbolizes hope, with the reminder that Jesus is coming and in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ.

Advent Wreath Blessing
Lord our God,
we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:
he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,
he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us,
he is the Saviour of every nation.
Lord God,
let your blessing come upon us
as we light the candles of this wreath.
May the wreath and its light
be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.
May he come quickly and not delay.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/. Amen.

We are grateful to the Altar Society for their work in decorating the Advent Wreath.
