World Day of the Sick

Image: Our Lady of Lourdes Feast Day

The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated on Thursday, 11th February. World Day of the Sick will be marked at 10 o’clock Mass and, following the Final Blessing, Prayers for the Sick, the Caregivers, and all those involved in medical care will be offered. These prayers are below.

Small prayer books for the sick, published by the Diocese, will be available in the church porch. If you handle or look through a booklet, we appeal to you to take it home with you and not to return it to the porch. This is out of respect for the safety of all those who visit the church.

Anointing of the Sick

Lord Jesus, You came into the world to heal
the sick and the dying, and to endure our
sufferings. You went about healing all and
bringing comfort to those in pain and need.
We come before You now, in this time of
illness, asking that You may be a source of our
strength in body, courage in spirit, and
patience in pain.
May we join ourselves more closely to You
and trust that You will heal all our pain and
suffering in love, knowing that, through You,
we can learn patience and peace.
Assist us and restore us to health, so that,
united more closely with You and our Father
in the Holy Spirit, we may give praise and
honour to Your name. Amen

World Day of the Sick

In his message for the 29th World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis urges a path of healing, grounded in a trusting and interpersonal relationship between the sick and those who care for them.

1. Prayer for Healing
Lord Jesus, You came into the world to heal the sick and the dying,
and to endure our sufferings. You went about healing all and bringing
comfort to those in pain and need.
We come before You now, in this time of illness, asking that You may
be a source of our strength in body, courage in spirit, and patience in
pain.
May we join ourselves more closely to You and trust that You will
heal all our pain and suffering in love, knowing that, through You, we
can learn patience and peace.
Assist us and restore us to health, so that, united more closely with
You and our Father in the Holy Spirit, we may give praise and honour
to Your name. Amen

2. Our Lady of Lourdes Prayer for Healing
O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy,
health of the sick, refuge of sinners,
comforter of the afflicted,
you know our wants, our troubles, our sufferings;
look with mercy on us.
By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes,
you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary,
whence you dispense your favours;

and already many sufferers have obtained
the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.
We come, therefore, with complete confidence
to implore your maternal intercession.
Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of our requests.
Through gratitude for your favours,
We will endeavour to imitate your virtues,
that we may one day share your glory.
Amen.

3. St. Joseph, Hope of the Sick
Benevolent Joseph, the Son of God placed
his life in your hands.
With Mary, you cared for Him who is the force of life.
May your compassion enfold our fragility, bringing us
the comfort of the divine presence.
We join with you in prayer, saying :
« Lord Jesus, Son of Living God, say a word for our healing ! »
Make us sensitive to the illnesses of those close to us.
Support our efforts and grant us courage in the fight
against all evil.
Help us to find meaning in God’s great project for humanity
beyond the sicknesses and sufferings that blind our sight.
The love of God be with us, as our hope lies with Him.
Amen.

4. Prayer for Nurses and Doctors
O merciful Father, who have wonderfully fashioned us in your own
image, and have made our bodies to be a temple of the Holy Spirit,
sanctify, we pray you, our doctors and nurses and all those whom
you have called to study and practice the arts of healing the sick and
the prevention of disease and pain. Strengthen them in body and
soul, and bless their work, that they may give comfort to those for
whose salvation your Son became Man, lived on this earth, healed
the sick, and suffered and died on the Cross. Amen.

5. The Caregiver’s Prayer
Compassionate and healing God, help us to see your face
in the faces of our sisters and brothers who are sick or injured.
Guide us to reach out to them with hearts of compassion
and hands which serve their needs.
When they are anxious,
help us to know how to reassure them.
When they feel alone,
help us to notice and be present.
When they feel confused, help us to listen and assist
in finding answers to their concerns.
When they need comfort, help us to communicate care and
understanding.
When they are weak or discouraged help us find ways to refresh
their spirits. When doubt or darkness touches them, give your Light
to guide them
and lift them up.
Help us as caregivers to always turn to You as the source
of our own strength and compassion as we seek to serve the needs
of
our sisters and brothers who are vulnerable. Amen.

6. God of wisdom,
bless medical scientists and researchers around the world
with insight and skill, dedication and fortitude
as they combat coronavirus and other diseases,
so that their work yields knowledge and understanding,
speedily finding a vaccine, treatments and deterrents to its spread.

7. Source of life,
grant public health and government officials
the strength to act swiftly and decisively
with compassion and understanding
in service to humankind,
fighting this outbreak
and the other diseases that still plague the planet,
diseases threatening the lives of our brothers and sisters,
nations and communities,
young and old. Amen.
